Do you know when to restore or refinish furniture that is an antique?
If you refinish an antique rather than restore it, you may reduce the value by thousands of dollars!
Before making your decision, here are a few things to consider:
Is it really an antique?
According to Merriam-Webster.com, an Antique is “any work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative object made at an earlier period and according to various customs laws at least 100 years ago.”
Some may argue that an antique is an item that is more than 50 years old. The latter may be more accurately referred to as vintage.
Does it have monetary value or just sentimental value?
It is important to know the value or potential value before refinishing an antique, because refinishing an antique may actually significantly reduce the value, regardless of how beautiful it turns out!
The natural wear and original finish on antique and vintage furniture may actually make the furniture piece more valuable. If disturbed, that value can be ruined.
Do you plan to sell it?
Whether you plan to use the antique for personal use or whether it is more of an investment will be a factor when deciding to restore or refinish furniture. The monetary value of the piece is more important than the sentimental value, if you plan to sell.
Is it serviceable in its current condition?
If the furniture piece is broken to the point that major work may be too time consuming or costly to restore, then refinishing may be a better option.
With the above questions in mind, do some research. Start by looking for a manufacturer label and a date of manufacture, then search for the item on the Internet.
If you have a 100+ year old antique and you are not sure of the value, you should have it professionally appraised before making a final a decision.
Most decisions to restore or refinish furniture comes down to a personal preference.
Ultimately, you will need to use your best judgment. Consider starting with the least invasive method to make the antique serviceable. Often times, a good cleaning and minor repairs are all that is needed.
Restoring your piece will keep it in its original condition for the most part, but sometimes that is not enough. Some pieces have to be refinished in order to be usable or personally aesthetically pleasing. Repairs might be needed or maybe you just want the furniture piece to fit with your décor. In this case, refinishing is your best option.
The Antiques Roadshow generally agrees with this notion: “Well-conceived and well-executed refinishing and restoration usually enhances the value of just about any piece of old furniture.”
If you do decide to restore a historical piece of furniture, keep in mind that restoring antique furniture is an art, and its something that should be done by a professional.
