Repairing Hardwood Floors

July 18, 2015 By Dawn Salpeck

If you have hardwood floors in your home, scratches, dents and stains are inevitable.

Most minor hardwood floor damage is caused by pushing something heavy on the floor such as furniture or appliances or dropping something onto the floor such as a soup can.

Depending on the extent of the scratches in the hardwood, sometimes touch up sticks may be all that is needed. Touch up sticks can be found at your local hardware store.

Deeper scratches and dents will require mending.

Repairing dents, scratches and stains on hardwood floors is not as simple as it may seem.

There are numerous factors involved:

Extent and cause of the damage

How deep are the scratches?

How noticeable is the damage?

Are the scratches across multiple floor boards?

Are the scratches in a high traffic area?

Small scratches on the uppermost layer of finish are easier to repair than scratches that have penetrated through the finish and impacted the wood itself.  Also, damage across the grain is a harder repair than scratches with the grain.

These type of repairs require much more than just a touch up marker.

Sometimes when repairing scratches that do not penetrate through the finish you can buff out the scratch, polish it out and lightly touch up the area. Minor stains can be repaired in a similar fashion.

Touch up sticks can be used for minor scratches.

An area with extensive damage will require repair with wood filler that matches the color of the floors.  This will only work if you have a small area of damage, it will not work if you are looking to fill deep scratches.

If you have an oil finished floor, this requires a different process. Please contact us for details.

It is best to prevent hardwood floor damage:

Take shoes off at the door

Trim pet nails

Vacuum often with hardwood floor brush attachment

Put pads on furniture feet

Wipe up spills immediately

Our expertise is in fine furniture repair; however, Salpeck’s Furniture Service can also repair small scratches, dents and stains in your hardwood floor.
