Prepare Your Home For The Holidays

November 15, 2014 By Dawn Salpeck

It ‘s that time of year again, time to prepare your home for the holidays!

holiday dinner place settingThe thought of having a large crowd of family and friends in your home can be stressful. With the added activity, you may have worries about damage to your fine furniture or hardwood floors.

We have come up with a few tips that will help protect your furniture and floors and make entertaining much less stressful.

Prepare Your Rooms

  • Minimize the chance of accidents, particularly if small children will be included in the family gathering, by removing valuables and knick knacks.
  • Move furniture against the walls to encourage standing. Be careful not to scratch the floor when moving furniture
  • Purchase inexpensive folding tables to place around the room for guests to place their drinks and dishes on.

Cover Surfaces

  • Place an extra door mat at the front door so guests have ample chances to wipe their feet.
  • Use holiday rugs in high traffic areas
  • Protect table tops by using decorative table cloths, runners and trivets

Setting Up Your Christmas Tree

If you do not take precautionary steps when setting up your Christmas tree, you may end up with scratches or water and sapped stained floors.

We have a few suggestions to protect your floors:

  • First you will need to find an old sheet, blanket, carpet scrap or towel to place under the tree.
  • Then use a plastic table cloth or drum size garbage bag to place on top of the soft cloth.
  • Alternatively you can use a felt-backed vinyl table cloth or a Christmas Tree Stand Matt found at your local hardware store
  • Now place your tree stand on top of the plastic covered surface.
  • If your Christmas tree came bound and wrapped, keep it wrapped until you have the tree securely placed in the tree stand.
  • Finally, use a tree skirt to hide the tree stand and plastic and do not over water the tree!

Planning ahead and preparing your home for your holiday guests will help make your holiday much less stressful.
