Do Your Kitchen Cabinets Need A Facelift?

April 19, 2014 By Dawn Salpeck

We have suggestions on how to give your cabinets a new, updated look!

refinished kitchen cabinetsCabinetry is often the centerpiece of a kitchen. When updating the look of your kitchen cabinets, there are several options to take into consideration. The first, and most expensive, option is to completely replace your cabinetry. This option; however,  is extremely expensive and oftentimes requires replacing the countertop as well. The second, and more affordable option is to update your current kitchen cabinets. Updating existing cabinetry can give your kitchen the facelift it needs, without the hefty price.

Here are a few options to up the appeal of your current kitchen cabinets, without going over your budget!

1. Cabinet Refacing

Cabinet refacing can be done by installing a new wood or laminate veneer over the existing cabinet fronts. This option achieves the look of replacement, without the higher cost.

2. Shading

A darker color of finish can be added to the existing finish on the cabinets. If done properly, the finished cabinets mimic the look of real wood. While shading does not allow for the repair of gouges and scratches, it is a good way to freshen up cabinets. For this reason, it is oftentimes used on older cabinets before a house is put on the market. However, it is important to note that in some cases shading can distort the look of wood so make sure to do your research before starting!

3. Total Refinishing

When doing a total refinishing of your cabinets, the original finish is completely removed before the cabinets are refinished. This is the best option for cabinetry with any gouges or scratches because the removal of the original finish allows for the blending of imperfections into the wood grain. Completely refinishing your cabinets also allows for a much wider range of color choices which includes painting or antiquing. Total refinishing is not only effective but affordable – oftentimes more so than other options listed above!
